LABEL MATES 3 - CARDINAL FUZZ & ODD BOX RECORDS

Leeds based label, Cardinal Fuzz, are not new to the game. 2014 proved to be a big year for the label with releases from Japanese psych heads, Kikagaku Moyo, Lumerians, The Oscillation, The heads and an ongoing number of others. Cardinal Fuzz started in the spring of 2013 with the release of Chilean band, The Pontiacs. The label put together an incredible line up for their night. Headlining are Anthroprophh, a band created by Paul Allen (The Heads), Gareth Turner and Jesse Webb (Big Naturals). Their second album, Outside the Circle was released in late 2014 and did not fail to create a dark and twisted realm of crazy experimental psych.

Alongside them play Mancunians, Dead Sea Apes, who have a chilling droned out sound which you can hear on their recently released album , High Evolutionary. With a name like , YOU'RE SMILING NOW BUT WE'LL ALL TURN INTO DEMONS, there's no doubt that it's going to be filled with weird scuzzy guitar riffs attempting to channel some sort of demons, albeit your own or from the inner ends of the world.

Odd Box Records have given themselves the mantra of DIY Pop music for the 21st Century. This refreshingly poppy take on DIY has gained momentum since their phoenix-like rise from the ashes of Lost Music Records in 2009. Alongside other London based indie pop labels, Fortuna POP! especially, Odd Box have come to define the British representation of the genre with a steady release schedule featuring Tyrannosauras Dead, T.O.Y.S and Joanna Gruesome. Recently releasing the 3rd Volume of their live at the 100 Club series, which features 5 singles in limited runs of 100 7”s, Odd Box are continuing to redefine the relationship between pop music and the DIY sensibilities we know so well.

From the world of Odd Box we have selected a handful of bands to play as part of our label mates series. Tyrannosauras Dead who released their debut album, Flying Ant Day last November. The record channels Vaselines-esque melodies combined with a huge bass and drum sound to blend perfectly into the Odd Box landscape. Joining them will be The Wolfhounds who released their Anthem/Middle Aged Freak single on Odd Box early last year. They will bring their noisier take on pop music alongside Tyrannosauras Dead on March 9th at the Shacklewell Arms.
