root of it all: las kellies

Argentinian post-punk/new wave trio Las Kellies have been making waves ever since the girls met at a gig in Buenos Aires and decided to start a band. Consisting of Ceci Kelly (guitar and vocals), Sil Kelly (drums and vocals) and Manuela Ducatanzeile (bass), It's been a good ride for the trio ever since then, with albums such as 'Kellies' and their newest one 'Friends and Lovers' released on Fire Records. Their distinctive sound has even gotten a 8/10 nod from NME and it's no stopping anytime soon for the girls as they embark on their UK/EU Tour in support of their new record.

We spoke to the girls about the musical influences around the new record and you can read more of it below.

One of our most listened to bands is The Rolling Stones. Not a big influence in our previous works, but certainly for 'Friends & Lovers'. Ceci and I were in the rehearsal room one day and I was joking around playing a drum pattern similar to Get Out Of My Cloud and I told Ceci, "Hey play something like Keith", and she immediately played a very cool riff and that became our song Sun Goes Down.

Because we left aside the riot and cheerleding way of singing with this new record like we did in our album Kalimera, for example, we tried leaning towards a more mature sound for the voice, like in classic rock songs. For some of them, Ceci got her inspiration from the beautiful angelical voice of Hope Sandoval.

One of the albums that really impressed us during the creation of 'Friends & Lovers' was 'One Track Mind' by Psychic Ills. I don't think we got a direct inspiration from it, but we were listening to the album non-stop. Some of the new sounds of Ceci's guitars, so different from Total Exposure, came from the psyche scene.

This new rock direction we took came from the rock and psyche scene very close to us during the creation of the album, by the hand of our brothers from Chile - The Ganjas, Follakzoid and Chicos de Nazca.

Las Kellies headline MOTH CLUB this Sunday with C.A.R and Porridge Radio as support. Grab your tickets for the show here
