Get To Know : Scarlett Woolfe

For those new to you, how would you describe your music in one sentence?

STANDING ON THE EARTH WITH A FISTFUL OF ASHES, BORN FROM THE FIRE AND BOUND TO THE SEA

Who are some bands or artists that have inspired your sound either now, or when you first started writing music?

MARINA TSVETAEVA - not many people have heard of her and she is incredible! I urge you to read her work

SCOUT NIBLETT - a recent obsession

GLENDA JACKSON + ELIZABETH TAYLOR for their bravery and fire PJ HARVEY - of course

ANNE SEXTON - always gets me through strange times

MARINA ABRAMOVITV - if you haven’t read Walk Through Walls - drop everything you’re doing and read it now

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF - for transporting me into endless other worlds TROY VAN LEEUWEN- ( George— my guitarist/ keys/lapsteel player in the bands favourite )

What exciting plans or projects can fans expect from you in the coming months? P

ART 6 of - A WOMAN BECOMES A WOLF WHEN SHE LEARNS HOW TO SCREAM will be held at the George Tavern on the 19TH OCTOBER. I am currently going through the submissions with my collaborator Alexander Gallimore and we just feel so very inspired by the work that has come through. It’s crazy times we are living in and I really do feel this space we are creating allows people to come together and speak about important issues, connect and potentially heal—-

Expect performance art - dance-- poetry -music- catharsis and community!!

You’re also running a workshop on the day, ‘A Woman Becomes a Wolf’, can you tell us more about it, what to expect?

The workshop is there to hopefully spark something/ inspire + guide you in some way. Fundamentally it is a space to gather and to have conversations. I don’t want to say too much about it, just that I’d particularly love people to come who feel that they haven’t had much experience in writing// performing and hope that they can feel like they have a safe space to explore, be intuitive and feel held. Bring your friends! your mother! Anyone you wish! All welcome!

You’ve mentioned imagery and poetry play a big part in writing songs, can you walk us through how a poem or image grows into a finished song?

My mother is a poet, my grandmother was also a poet, sometimes i hear the poem and the song in my head as one and at other times the poem sits still for a while in a notebook or memo on my phone and then a song emerges in which the poetry fits in…
